On Tour
Travel to
another city and move yourself with your own bicycle! So you can start directly at the
station und discover the city. Or you leave the car at a place where parking is still free
and you continue with the Brompton. Like this I visited already a lot of towns.
Once
I have taken the Brompton with me on a flight to Berlin. Because I was on
tour for a weekend only, I only had a small backpack for the hand luggage. So I could
leave the Brompton as a normal piece of luggage at the check-in. I looked for
possibilities to protect something particularly, but did not find anything. Just the two
screws of the hinge clamps I removed and a belt I lashed around the Brompton. I handed it
over without cover, so that the carriers did not get the idea to throw
this piece of luggage.
At
right the Brompton lies in the luggage rack of a train.
For reasons of safety I fix it always with a belt. So I avoid the bike falling down when
the train is shaking. Like this I can take the bicycle with me even in german ICE-trains
(where normal bikes are forbidden)! In the train I always use my selfmade cover for the
Brompton. First I am not always interested to get curious glances and secondly I avoid
discussions with the personnel (just to be safe).
Like
this I traveled to Lübeck. At the way back I had a stay of a quarter of
an hour in Hamburg for changing. Well, I used it for a small tour in the
city - risky.
But usually I drive by car
and have the Brompton always with me. The inventor of the new car "Smart" said
someday, his criterion for the new car is "Two persons and two boxes of water
bottles". On my last trip to Paris I had "2 bicycles and 2
boxes of beer" in the trunk - not mentioned the 4 persons in the front... and
this by going with 4.8L/100km, but this is another theme... (see "Ecomatic"). In the picture at right
the boxes with the bottles are missing, but you see half the trunk still being empty.
Driving
the Brompton in Paris (see below) I find especially exciting. It is a
comletly new feeling to dicover the town like this. You get a real idea of its size - and
after my experience, Paris is rather small. For cyclists red lights are unimportant. You
roll as far as you can see the whole crossroads and continue if nobody is coming.
The
Frenchmen were especially interested in the Brompton. My friend and me
were asked more often than in Germany. With pleasure I take the 20 seconds
time to fold and unfold the bicycle. "C'est magnifique!"
I
still have some plans for journeys: My dream is New York with a bike. I hope it succeeds
in 1999. This year I will be on tour in Morocco with the Brompton. Some
pictures you can see in january '99 on this website.
